Marrying abroad: Gibraltar

Актуализирано: 16.08.2021 г.

Quickly and easily our compatriots can get married in Gibraltar. The process from filing the paperwork to the union can take 3 to 4 weeks at the shortest. You are not required to have lived in the country for a large period of time and hold citizenship.

Applications are submitted online via email, and possible dates for the ceremony are chosen in advance with the goal of the newlyweds traveling once.

One day before the wedding, the couple must report to the Gibraltar Registry Office with the necessary documents. In addition to ID/passport and birth certificate, the authorities require hotel confirmation from Booking or a payment voucher that proves the couple's intention to stay overnight in the city. You will need to provide additional documents if you have changed your name or married in the past.

Two witnesses, who may be your friends or colleagues, must be present during the ceremony.

By 15 September 2021, the Bulgarian government must submit a written statement on Lily and Dari's case to the ECtHR.

Some time ago, we told you about the story of Lily and Dari - a gay female couple who married in the UK in 2016, the fruit of a long-standing relationship that began in 2009. Upon their return to Bulgaria, they are denied recognition of their marriage by our institutions, thus exhausting all domestic remedies. Deystvie has filed a case with the European Court of Human Rights in September 2020. The court's case law says that same-sex couples need legal recognition and protection of their relationship, such as the form of protection provided by the institution of registered cohabitation.

Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates on developments in the case.
